It is not only teenagers who suffer from oily skin and open pores. Men and women worldwide of all ages are plagued by the excess production of sebum in the skin, which causes this condition. The main reason people have this type of skin is genetics, so the problem is inherited from family members. Even movie stars suffer, and if you look closely on photos which have not been edited, you will see that their skin is far from perfect.

As you might know, the excessive skin oil, dirt and dust usually clogs pores which in turn lead to serious skin problems, including enlarged pores, blackheads and acne. I do not even mention the harmful influence of the sun, wind and other negative external factors which may cause awful stretch marks, wrinkles, age spots, etc.

When your pores start to clog, wash your face with warm tolerable water. This will loosen the dirt and the excess oils. Use a gentle cleanser twice a day. Likewise, use a gentle yet grainy exfoliant cleanser every other day. This will polish off the dry, dead skin that is clogging the pores. Do not over use makeup as it tends to clog the pores. And try to do a simple facial steam once a week to clear your pores as well as rejuvenate the face.

Pimples, acne and oily skin make the pores appear larger while sun tan and cold winds make them appear smaller than their normal size. But these are temporary effects and revert back to the original when the skin becomes normal. You might have heard people complaining of scars due to pimples. This can again be related to the skin pores.

Skin pores are natural openings of hair follicles, oil and sweat glands at the surface of the skin. That's all they really are. When skin is behaving, just the right amount of sebum, or natural skin oil, is being secreted from the pores to naturally lubricate skin. But when hormone levels fluctuate, or we don't take care of our skin (like washing with a good facial cleanser), pores become clogged with excess sebum, dirt, bacteria, or dead skin cells.

There are a number of products to help minimize pores, facial masks which draw out impurities, herbal steam which opens the pores so that your face can be thoroughly cleansed, and exfoliates, microdermabrasion treatments, alpha and beta hydroxyl acids and chemical peels all slough off the top portion of the skin. While all of the above methods will reduce pore size, it is important to take into account your skin type and sensitivity.

For normal skin type use mandarin or lavender essential oil. Oily skin is a bit more tricky and requires oils that will not add more oil. For oily skin, lemon or eucalyptus oils are very suitable. Dry skin can be cleansed with a facial steam to which rose or chamomile essential oil is added.

Have a hot shower in a closed bathroom. Turn the water on as hot as you can stand and let the steam from the hot shower open your face pores. This is one of the most effective and easiest ways to remove all tiny blackheads.
